Understanding Severe Thunderstorms through Chemistry!

Severe thunderstorm

Thunderstorms and O Levels Chemistry or A Levels Chemistry?

Ever wondered what’s really going on when a thunderstorm lights up the sky and shakes the windows? While most of us just reach for our umbrellas, Mother Nature is busy conducting chemistry experiments in the sky—and they’re more explosive than any lab you’ve seen.

From lightning-triggered chemical reactions to acid rain formation and high-energy gas collisions, thunderstorms are full of fascinating processes that tie directly into your O-Level and A-Level Chemistry syllabus. Yes, that’s right—topics like acids and bases, atmospheric pollutants, energetics, and even reversible reactions all come to life in the middle of a storm!

So before you say chemistry is all equations and lab coats, let’s dive into how the roar of thunder and the flash of lightning reveal the powerful chemistry of our atmosphere.

⚡ 1. Chemical Reactions in the Atmosphere (O-Level)

Topic: Air & Atmosphere | Environmental Chemistry

During thunderstorms, lightning provides the energy needed to trigger chemical reactions in the atmosphere. For example:

  • Nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂) in the air can react under high temperatures from lightning:

    N2(g)+O2(g)→2NO(g)

This nitric oxide (NO) can further react with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), which dissolves in water to form acid rain:

  • 2NO2+ H2O → HNO2 + HNO3

🔗 Connection: Students learn about air pollutants like nitrogen oxides and their role in acid rain, a topic in O-Level Chemistry (Environmental Chemistry).

🌧️ 2. Acid Rain Formation (O-Level & A-Level)

Topics: Acids and Bases | Reversible Reactions | Equilibria

  • Thunderstorms can increase the amount of acidic compounds in rain due to more NOₓ and SO₂ dissolving in rainwater.

  • This links directly to acid–base chemistry and pH indicators taught in O-Level and equilibrium reactions in A-Level Chemistry. As with the example, when NO2 dissolves in rainwater, it forms a mixture of nitric acid (HNO₃) and nitrous acid (HNO₂).

These are acids, and they lower the pH of rainwater, turning it into acid rain. Normally, rainwater is slightly acidic (pH ~5.6) due to dissolved CO₂, but acid rain can drop to pH 4 or lower, causing environmental harm.

⚗️ 3. Energy and Activation Energy (A-Level)

Topic: Energetics / Thermodynamics

  • The formation of nitrogen oxides from lightning is a very endothermic reaction requiring lots of energy.

  • This real-life example shows how reactions with high activation energy (Ea) can still occur when the surrounding temperature is extremely high, like in a lightning strike.

Why Thunderstorms and Chemistry Matter

Severe thunderstorms aren’t just dramatic—they’re chemically charged events that can cause real-world disasters like floods. Lightning causes nitrogen and oxygen in the air to react and form nitrogen oxides, which dissolve in rain to create acid rain. These chemical reactions lower the pH of rainwater and can damage buildings, soil, and aquatic life. Understanding this helps students see how topics like acids and bases, reversible reactions, and equilibrium are directly linked to the environment.

Real-World Events: The Australia Example
In May 2025, eastern Australia experienced historic flooding, with over 400 mm of rainfall in just two days across New South Wales. Warmer air and oceans—linked to climate change—increased the moisture and energy available for storms, leading to intense rainfall. These supercharged thunderstorms are a combination of physical and chemical processes, and knowing the chemistry behind them helps scientists improve weather prediction and design better flood protection systems.
