Singapore’s 2026 School Phone Ban

Secondary School Phone Ban
Starting January 2026, all secondary school students in Singapore will be required to keep their smartphones and smartwatches completely out of use during the entire school day.
This new rule applies not only to lesson time, but also to recess, CCAs, supplementary classes, remedials, enrichment sessions and any on-campus activity. Students may still bring their devices to school, but they must be stored away in lockers, bags or designated areas.
Key rules of the 2026 phone ban:
- No smartphone use during school hours
- No phone access during recess, CCAs and after-school programmes
- Smartwatches with messaging/call functions are also restricted
- Devices must remain stored throughout the school day
- Exceptions only for medical needs or emergencies
Why Is MOE Implementing This Now?

The decision expands on earlier rules already applied in primary schools. MOE has stated that excessive smartphone use impacts students’ attention, learning focus, sleep quality, and social interaction, especially during adolescence. By reducing on-campus phone dependence, schools hope to create a healthier learning environment and protect students from digital distractions.
Reasons behind the Move:
- Excessive screen time during school leads to poor attention span
- Increased social-media stress and comparison among teens
- More meaningful social interaction without devices
- Greater engagement in CCAs and recess activities
- Alignment with primary school restrictions introduced in 2025
What Students Should Expect in 2026
The biggest adjustment will be learning to go through a full school day including recess without checking phones or communicating through them.
This shift also means students will rely more on school announcements, fixed meeting plans, and face-to-face communication.
(This is also a good opportunity to finish up on homeworks, or picking up reading as a hobby!)
How Learning Will Change With Device Restrictions
Although smartphones will be restricted, students will still use Personal Learning Devices (PLDs) such as tablets or Chromebooks.
These remain central to the national digital learning framework. However, MOE will tighten usage by locking devices earlier (10.30pm instead of 11pm) and monitoring screen time more closely.
Impact on learning:
- PLDs remain allowed for structured lessons
- Device lock-time shifts earlier to protect student rest
- Teachers can still use digital tools for teaching
- Students must complete homework earlier to avoid lock-outs
- Less multitasking = better focus during lessons
How Parents Should Prepare Their Child for the Change
Parents may need to adjust communication habits, especially if they frequently message their children during school hours. It’s a good time to practise reduced phone dependence at home and discuss strategies for staying organised without relying on constant device access.
Parent preparation checklist:
- Agree on a communication plan before school starts
- Remind children to check messages only before and after school
- Ensure children know how to access the general office phone if needed
- Have conversations about responsible digital habits at home
A Chance to Reset Digital Habits
While the ban may seem new, it is important to remember that some schools already have similar rules put in place.
The phone ban presents a chance for students to develop healthier routines, focus better in class, and deepen friendships through direct interaction. With PLDs still available for schoolwork, the goal is not to remove technology, but to rebalance how it is used, especially during the critical teenage years.
