PSLE AL Score & Posting Group Calculator 2026 (Updated)

2026 Update: This PSLE AL Score and Posting Group Calculator has been updated for 2026. The scoring system remains the same: AL1 (90-100%), AL2 (85-89%), AL3 (80-84%), AL4 (75-79%), AL5 (65-74%), AL6 (45-64%), AL7 (20-44%), AL8 (below 20). The best 4 AL scores are added to give the PSLE score (4-32). For secondary school COP reference based on the 2025 posting exercise, see our Secondary School Cut-Off Point 2026 guide.

Understanding the PSLE Achievement Level (AL) System / PSLE AL Score – Key Details Explained

The PSLE Achievement Level (AL) system is designed to reflect how well a student has mastered each subject, rather than ranking students against one another. Each subject is graded on an independent performance scale, which means your results show your level of understanding, not your position among peers.

How PSLE AL Scores Are Assigned

Each subject is marked and graded into one of eight Achievement Levels:

  • AL1 – Very strong mastery

  • AL2 to AL4 – Strong to good understanding

  • AL5 to AL6 – Basic to developing understanding

  • AL7 to AL8 – Emerging understanding

The four subject AL scores (English, Mathematics, Science, Mother Tongue) are added together to form the total PSLE score, which ranges from 4 (best) to 32 (weakest).
Lower total scores indicate stronger overall performance.

  • Your eligibility for Posting Groups (1, 2 or 3)

  • The level at which you can take each subject in Secondary 1 (G3, G2 or G1)

Students who perform well in individual subjects can take that subject at a more advanced level, even if their overall PSLE score is moderate. This makes it especially important to build balanced strengths across English, Mathematics, Science and Mother Tongue.

How AL Scores Are Used During Secondary School Posting

After results are released, students list their preferred secondary schools in order. Schools then admit students based on:

  1. Total PSLE Score (lower first)

  2. Citizenship priority (Singapore Citizens before PRs, then International Students)

  3. School choice order (higher preference chosen first)

  4. Tie-breakers if scores are identical

The PSLE score of the last student admitted becomes the school’s Cut-Off Point (COP) for that year.

Subject-Level Placement Under Full Subject-Based Banding

Beyond school placement, AL scores also determine the difficulty level at which each subject starts in Secondary 1.

Based on subject performance:

  • Students scoring AL5 or better for a Standard subject can take it at G3 (higher level)

  • Students scoring AL6 for Standard or AL A for Foundation can usually take it at G2

  • Weaker performance may lead to starting at G1, with opportunities to move up later

This means a student could be in one Posting Group but take different subjects at different levels, depending on strengths.
