G1 G2 G3 Subjects

In 2019, Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) introduced Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) to replace the traditional streaming system in secondary schools. This initiative allows students to take subjects at varying levels—G1 (General 1), G2 (General 2), and G3 (General 3)—based on their strengths and interests, rather than being confined to fixed academic streams.

Understanding G1, G2, and G3 Levels:

  • G1 (General 1): Comparable to the former Normal (Technical) standard, G1 subjects focus on foundational knowledge and skills.
  • G2 (General 2): Aligned with the previous Normal (Academic) standard, G2 subjects offer a more comprehensive curriculum, bridging foundational and advanced content.
  • G3 (General 3): Equivalent to the former Express standard, G3 subjects provide an in-depth and rigorous exploration of the subject matter.

Implementation and Progress:

The phased implementation of Full SBB began with a pilot in select secondary schools in 2020, aiming for full adoption across all secondary schools by 2024. This approach allows schools to tailor the transition based on their unique contexts and student needs.

How Does G1 G2 G3 Subject Affect Secondary School students?

Impact on Students and Education Landscape:

  • Personalized Learning: Students can now select subjects at levels that align with their abilities and interests, promoting a more customized and engaging educational experience.
  • Reduced Labeling: By moving away from rigid streaming, Full SBB aims to minimize the stigma associated with academic labels, fostering a more inclusive school environment.
  • Flexibility and Mobility: The system allows students to adjust their subject levels based on their progress, encouraging continuous learning and adaptability.
(Unlike traditional schooling where students are usually gathered for one class, the SBB curriculum will mix students into mixed form classes comprising students from different Posting Groups for their subjects and allowing them to learn with peers of different backgrounds, strengths, and interests.)

Popular Subject Choices: While specific data on the popularity of subjects at each level is limited, core subjects such as English Language, Mother Tongue Languages, Mathematics, and Science remain fundamental components of the curriculum. The flexibility of Full SBB enables students to take these subjects at levels that match their abilities, with opportunities to adjust based on their academic progress.

Adjustments Over Time: The system permits students to switch subject levels during their secondary education, allowing for personalized learning pathways. This flexibility supports students in maximizing their potential across different subjects.
