Compulsory Education In Today’s World

Education in today’s world is a critical component of society, it allows one to understand the world and obtain knowledge. Therefore, most countries have made compulsory education a form of necessity. The same is applicable for education in Singapore, where people have access to basic academic education, at least until the age of 6 to 15 years old. 

Given Singapore’s education system, most students move on to pursue further studies in secondary schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.

Education equips individuals with the skills and knowledge required in the job market, contributing to economic growth.

Based on the “Key statistics on employment” by the Singapore Ministry of Manpower, up to 91% of graduates in the labour force are employed with a gross income of $3,000. This includes the main universities such as NTU, NUS, SMU and SUSS. 

Even with the offerings of better economic opportunities, students will have to complement their knowledge with skills and take into account factors such as job market conditions, economic inequalities, and changing industry demands can affect the relationship between education and employment outcomes.

Social and Civic Engagement 

Education fosters civic awareness, active citizenship, and social responsibility. It equips individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in democratic processes, participate in community initiatives, and contribute positively to society.

Counterargument: Some argue that education does not automatically lead to active citizenship, and there can be instances of educated individuals who are disengaged or apathetic towards social and civic issues.

With a good basis and results in science, it will enable individuals to work in labs and head towards scientific development frontiers. 

Understanding the Natural World 

Fundamentally, science provides a framework for understanding the natural world, including the laws and principles governing various phenomena. It helps students develop a deep appreciation for the beauty, complexity, and interconnectedness of the universe. 

This also means that students can explore career options in biological life such as marine biology which in itself consists of sub categories such as water composition/chemistry, molecular studies, animal biology and several other interconnected fields!

In recent years, the development of EV batteries and environmental conservation strategies have also found its roots in the research and evidence provided by scientists worldwide on global warming temperatures, water toxicity, animal extinctions and the like. 

Promoting Critical Thinking and Reasoning 

Science education emphasizes critical thinking skills, logical reasoning, and evidence-based thinking. Students learn to evaluate and analyze information, distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources, and make reasoned judgments. These skills are transferrable to various aspects of life beyond science.

One of the wonders of science is its presence in everything that we do, and that reach into the world includes the universe above. Astrology and Cosmology are also fields of science that students can explore. In these professions, studying the composition of the galaxy and its constituents such as the moon or the sun are important to prevent threats towards the entire human population.
