O Level Chemistry Syllabus 2026: Pure and Combined Science Explained

O Level Chemistry Syllabus 2026: Pure and Combined Science Explained
If you are looking for the O Level Chemistry syllabus, check your subject code first. In Singapore, Chemistry may be taken as a subject on its own or as part of Combined Science. Both routes teach chemistry concepts and practical skills, but they have different syllabus documents and examination papers.
Which Chemistry syllabus are you taking?
| Subject | 2026 syllabus code | Where to find the detailed guide |
|---|---|---|
| Chemistry, commonly called Pure Chemistry | 6092 | Pure Chemistry O Level syllabus |
| Science (Physics, Chemistry) | 5086 | Combined Science Chemistry syllabus |
| Science (Chemistry, Biology) | 5088 | Combined Science Chemistry syllabus |
You may also see 5087 in lists of Combined Science subjects. That code is for Physics and Biology, so it does not include Chemistry. Confirm your own code with your school or examination documents before using a revision checklist. SEAB lists the subjects and codes offered to school candidates in 2026.
What will you study in O Level Chemistry?
Across the two routes, students encounter areas such as particles and atomic structure, chemical bonding, calculations involving chemical formulae, acids and salts, the periodic table, and organic chemistry. They must also use what they have learned to explain observations, work with data and solve unfamiliar problems.
The exact content and level of detail depend on your syllabus. A general topic list is useful for orientation, but it should not replace your subject’s official document. For a topic-by-topic breakdown, use the 6092 Pure Chemistry guide or the Combined Science Chemistry guide.
How are the examinations different?
For Chemistry 6092, candidates take Paper 1 (multiple choice), Paper 2 (structured and free response) and Paper 3 (practical). Paper 2 includes questions that require students to interpret information and apply chemical ideas, as well as questions testing their understanding of the syllabus content. See the official 2026 Chemistry 6092 syllabus.
For Combined Science 5086 or 5088, Chemistry is assessed alongside another science. Candidates take a shared multiple-choice paper, a Chemistry structured and free response paper, a paper for their other science, and a practical test. Your other science determines which subject papers apply. See the official 2026 Combined Science syllabus.
This is why it matters to revise from the correct syllabus: a Chemistry topic may appear in both routes, while the content you are expected to know and the papers you sit are determined by your subject code.
