Can Combined Science Go to JC

In Singapore, students who take Combined Science—such as Physics and Chemistry—can still enter Junior College (JC) if they meet the general admissions criteria. The belief that only students who take “Pure Science” can enter JC is a misconception.

Entry into JC with Combined Science:
- Eligibility for JC: Admission to JC is largely based on the student’s L1R5 score—which includes your best six subjects, including English and relevant subjects. If a student performs well in their overall O-Level results, they can still enter JC, even with Combined Science.
- H2 Science in JC: While Pure Science (like Pure Chemistry or Pure Physics) may require a deeper foundation, students with Combined Science can still opt for H2 Chemistry/ H2 Physics/ H2 Biology in JC. The JC syllabus for H2 subjects is designed to accommodate both Pure and Combined Science students, although students may need to catch up on certain foundational topics from Pure Science.

- Combined Science and Subject Choices: Students taking Combined Science (Physics and Chemistry) or other combinations are often worried about whether they can handle H2 Chemistry or Physics in JC.
However, many students successfully transition from Combined Science to H2 Science subjects in JC, provided their overall score is strong and they are committed to bridging any knowledge gaps.
Important Points:
- Academic Performance: The student’s L1R5 score is the key determinant for JC entry. As long as the score is competitive, the specific subjects (Combined vs Pure Science) are less of an issue.
- Other Factors: Other than the L1R5, other non academic achievements such as CCA’s, or prior participation in science related events, competitions may also be taken into consideration by the schools of your choice, be sure to add them in during the registration process! (Provide documentation if possible).
- Subject Preparation: Students from Combined Science may need to put in extra effort to master the more challenging aspects of H2 Science subjects in JC but are not inherently at a disadvantage if they have a solid understanding of the basics.
In summary, students who take Combined Science still have a decent chance of entering JC, especially if their overall O-Level score is strong. They can pursue H2 Chemistry or Physics in JC, although they might need to work on certain gaps in knowledge compared to Pure Science students.

Should I Take H2 Science in JC?
There are many factors that go into choosing a school, most students struggle with choosing between ITE, Polytechnic Courses, JC’s or Universities.
However, for a secondary school student that is considering entering a JC science stream, the following 4 key points are some of the most important points to consider!
1. Strength in Specific Sciences (Physics/Chemistry/Biology)
- Evaluate Strengths: Students should carefully assess which science subject they are naturally strong in. If a student has consistently performed well in Physics, Chemistry, or Biology during their secondary school years, it might indicate that they are better suited to continue in that area at H2 level.
- H2 Science is Challenging: Each H2 Science subject involves a deeper and more rigorous level of study, requiring a strong foundation. Therefore, taking a science subject just for the sake of it, without the necessary proficiency, could lead to academic struggles.
Refer to the H2 Chemistry Syllabus here for a look at what is covered!
2. Interest in the Subject
- Passion Drives Success: Interest in a subject is often linked to better performance. Students who are genuinely curious about how things work in the physical world may enjoy Physics, while those with an interest in chemical reactions or living organisms may prefer Chemistry or Biology.
- Motivation and Consistency: Given the challenging nature of H2 subjects, long-term interest in the subject can keep students motivated through difficult topics and help them stay consistent in their studies.
3. University Admissions and Career Relevance
- University Pathways: Certain university courses, such as Medicine, Engineering, or Science degrees, require specific H2 subjects for eligibility. For example, H2 Chemistry is a prerequisite for most Medicine courses, while H2 Physics is often required for Engineering.
- Career Prospects: Students should think about their long-term career goals. While not all careers demand science qualifications, many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields offer strong job prospects. Choosing an H2 Science that aligns with future career ambitions can be beneficial for university admissions and professional opportunities later on.
4. Scoring Potential
- Balancing Interest with Results: While interest is important, it is equally crucial to evaluate whether the student can realistically perform well in the subject. A poor score in H2 Science can bring down the overall University Admission Score, so students must consider if they have the aptitude to succeed in the subject.
- Exams and Performance: Being able to score well in a subject is a key consideration in Singapore’s competitive education system. A subject that students struggle with, even if they are interested in it, could negatively affect their overall A-Level score. Strong results are crucial for securing spots in top university courses.
