What Parents Should Know About the New Central Kitchen Model for School Lunches (From Jan 2026)

What Is Happening?
MOE central kitchen programme
Starting January 2026, 13 Singapore schools will adopt a central kitchen model — meaning that meals will no longer be cooked onsite at each school’s canteen, but prepared centrally and delivered to the schools.
This change comes in response to canteen vendor shortages and aims to standardize meal quality, reduce operational strain on individual schools, and streamline food safety protocols.
Under this setup, a central kitchen (or kitchens) will handle large-scale meal production, packaging, and delivery, while the individual school canteens will act as distribution points and reheating stations.
Which Schools Will Operate With the Central Kitchen Model
The pilot will roll out in 13 schools across Singapore, selected due to logistical suitability, vendor challenges, or demand factors.

Over time, depending on the pilot’s success and the supply of vendors for school canteens, the Education Ministry may expand the model to more schools nationwide.
How Students Will Pay for the Meal
From what’s reported, students will still pay for meals as usual — whether via cash, meal cards, or e-payment systems in the school.
*Given that some of the meals are pre-cooked or presented in bento form, parents can also help to make the order and pay online in advance! For example, for caterer Cheng Cheng “Orders have to be placed via Chang Cheng’s AmiApp 18 hours in advance.”
The pricing structure is expected to remain similar from around $1.80 and less than $4, with possible subsidies for students from lower-income families.
The central kitchen model may simplify payments because all meals will follow a standardized menu and pricing, reducing variability between schools.
What Are the Potential Drawbacks of This Model and What to Keep Note Of
- Loss of Menu Flexibility & Local Preferences
Because meals are mass-produced, menus will be less tailored to individual school students or cultural preferences, but diversity in the meal is currently being added.
These are some of the food options:
– Fishball beehoon soup,
– Spaghetti chicken bolognese,
– Sweet and sour chicken with rice,
– Baked chicken tikka rice,
– Teriyaki braised chicken with rice,
– Japanese curry chicken rice.
- Food Delivery & Freshness Issues
Transport time and reheating logistics can affect food quality — meals may not feel as fresh, or textures might change.
– Regarding the food collection, pupils may retrieve their pre-ordered meals from individual food lockers in the school by tapping on the terminals with their ez-link cards. - Reduced Onsite Vendor Opportunities
Some schools or canteen vendors may lose business or opportunity to innovate or offer specialty food. - Logistical Challenges & Costs
A failure in delivery, power outage, or delay could disrupt an entire school’s meal service. Also, central kitchens must ensure scalability and reliability.
5. Health & Safety Concerns
Central kitchens must maintain high standards of hygiene, prevent cross-contamination, and manage food allergies across a larger scale.
